A series of training sessions for women and girls from Roma communities, organized by the Zakarpattia Regional Charitable Foundation “Blago” with the support of UN Women in Ukraine and funding from the UN Women’s Peace and Humanitarian Fund (WPHF), yielded unexpected yet invaluable results. Contrary to widespread stereotypes that Roma women are allegedly not interested in learning, reality proved to be quite different. These women are eager for knowledge and opportunities that can help improve their lives and the lives of their families.
⠀Each training session resonated deeply with the participants. Topics related to women’s rights and opportunities in society were particularly in demand. Roma women expressed a strong desire to learn more about their rights, ways to integrate into society, and opportunities for personal development.
⠀Special attention was given to the training on women’s health. It revealed issues that are rarely discussed: most Roma women lack basic knowledge about family planning, maintaining health, and accessing treatment. This training became an essential step in raising awareness and empowering women to take better care of their health.
⠀“We realized that knowledge is not just a resource for an individual but also an opportunity to change the future of an entire community,” said Eleonora Kulchar, Director of the Zakarpattia Regional Charitable Foundation “Blago.”
⠀These training sessions have become a significant avenue of support for Roma communities. Each opportunity provided is a step toward integrating Roma families into society, breaking barriers and stereotypes. They have proven that Roma women are ready to learn, develop, and actively participate in public life if given the chance and support.
⠀Work with Roma communities continues, and every project like this confirms that education, awareness, and support are the keys to change.
